CHIPPEWA PLAN EN MAS WILD RICE HARVEST AT CHIEF HOLE-IN-THEDAY LAKE TO SUPPORT LOCAL CLEAN WATER PROTECTION EVENTS

Next week, 1855 Treaty Authority members will gather to traditionally harvest wild rice at Hole-in-the-day Lake in Nisswa on August 27.

Tribal harvesters have announced an off-reservation harvest season throughout the 1855 ceded territory which reaches to North Dakota and Canada as well as Brainerd and the Iron Range.

“Hole-in-the-day Lake was selected in part in remembrance of the Chippewa Chief Hole-inthe-day and Gull Lake reservation during the 2015 harvesting season,” said Boone Wadena, “and to remind people how important wild rice is to our culture, traditions and whole way of life. ‘

The 1855 Treaty Authority hopes to bring greater attention and participation to the protection of clean water events with Honor the Earth Feast of the Wild Rice Moon at Lutheran Church of the Cross and Leech Lake Area Watershed Foundation Jazz at Arthur’s. Both events are in Nisswa on the evening of August 27 and the public is invited.

All events and fundraisers are meant to bring attention to the permanent and ongoing environmental risks of new crude oil pipelines planning to bring Canadian tar sands oil and Bakken crude through new, pristine, wild rice lakes, rivers and aquifers.

The 1855 Treaty Authority wants to remind everyone that on-reservation wild rice harvesting is restricted to individuals licensed by each of the respective Chippewa reservations throughout Minnesota.
