Tomahawk Tassels. Here we go, Again. The GAP’s Manifest Destiny shirt, NoDoubt’s offensive video, the Victoria’s Secret headdress debacle, half-naked Pocahotties every halloween, you name it, it never stops, but it will. We believe in the intelligence of the non-Indian community, kind of. Additionally, we Indigenous can only demand respect. Any human being will. We don’t have a choice. Some of us still have self respect, they couldn’t erase our dignity after all the genocide and the holocaust we survived. We will never be erased. We are growing, we are beginning to thrive. So you will see continous efforts on our part to demand respect. We will see continuous efforts on their part to urge us again and again to “get over it.” We are over it; “it” meaning the period of stagnation in which bull shit like Tomahawk Tassel’s mockery of our people can go on unchecked. We are over it, that is precisely why we demand respect in the face of the Washington Redskins, Cleveland Indians, University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux and so on and so on.

Tomahawk Tassels is a Burlesque performance. I never new what “burlesque” meant until now. Heres the wiki: Burlesque is a literary, dramatic or musical work intended to cause laughter by caricaturing the manner or spirit of serious works, or by ludicrous treatment of their subjects.[1] The word derives from the Italian burlesco, which itself derives from the Italian burla – a joke, ridicule or mockery.[2]

Tomahawk Tassels is admittedly a mockery, she is pissing in our faces. I’m not even going to elaborate on the male-dominated objectification of the female species, or the un-nerving Violence Against Women, especially Indigenous women, the rapes, the molestation, the beatings, the recent gang rape of a Native woman -that’s what Tomahawk Tassels promotes.

Cultures which attempt to conquer other cultures attempt to enslave the minds of the colonizer and colonized alike by creating media (pop culture) which objectifies, villianizes, mocks, ridicules, or trivializes the colonized. Thereby creating situations which the colonizer finds humorous and at the same time poisoning the self-perception and esteem of the colonized. The colonizer attempts to force the colonized to view themselves through the lens created by the colonizer. We are not fully colonized. We are freeing minds and spirits daily and we are not going to put up with your bullshit. Protest, direct action, media campaigns, frank discussions with friends (Indian and Non-Indian), whatever it take we will continue to see.
