Five Native American Women Officially Announce Candidacy for Office in Rapid City

RAPID CITY –A historic first for Rapid City will be celebrated tomorrow at a press conference announcing the official candidacy of five Native American women running for municipal office.

Join Rapid City community members on March 28, 2019 at 3 PM in front of the City Administration building to show support for Mayoral candidate, Natalie Stites; Ward 1 hopeful Terra Houska, Ramona Harrington in Ward 2, Stephanie A. Savoy for Ward 3, and Cante Heart who hopes to land a seat on city council representing Ward 5.

“This is an opportunity that rarely presents itself. Rapid City has an opportunity to elect passionate and capable city council members who can represent the views of a wide range of its population,” said organizer Kellen Returns From Scout. “This is an effort to change the way that elections are contested in Rapid City. That Native Americans deserve to be a part of this process and we will participate as candidates from here on out to lead Rapid City.”

At the press conference, Returns From Scout and other community members will speak about the historical implications of this year’s lineup of candidates and their “visionary” appeal. The candidates will also introduce themselves, as they begin their individual campaigns in their respective races.

Rapid City voters will VOTE on Tuesday, June 4 to elect a Mayor and Council representatives, technically considered Alderman, of the City’s five wards. The races for Mayor and Wards 1, 2 & 5 each consist of two candidates. While there are four candidates seeking the Ward 3 Council position and three candidates vying for a position on the City Council from Ward 4. In Wards 3 and 4, the top vote-getter in the June 4 election must receive 50 percent plus one vote to secure the seat. If this threshold is not reached the top two choices will compete in a run-off election Tuesday, June 25.
