President Trump’s Department of Justice MMIW Plan Falls Short
ALBUQUERQUE, NM — Today, Congresswoman Deb Haaland (NM-01) demanded more from the Trump Administration’s Department of Justice after they released a plan on missing and murdered indigenous women and people:
“Though the Department of Justice’s plan on missing and murdered indigenous people is welcome, it falls short from what Indian Country needs to address this crisis and combat generations of violence against Native women and people.
“The DOJ’s plan reflects a lack of consultation and with Tribes, which is a pattern of this Administration on all Indian Country issues. This plan doesn’t include the adequate amount of funding that Tribes have continuously asked for or the coordination at the local and tribal level where they know the issue best.
“I’m especially disappointed Secretary Barr released this plan after he refused to meet with tribal leadership and community organizations who are working on the ground to address this crisis while he was in Albuquerque last week.”
