May 22, 2018 - Water Protectors Shut Down Kinder Morgan Terminal in Seattle

Seattle, WA – On May 20th, 2018 nearly 400-people took to the land and sea in opposition to the Kinder Morgan backed Trans Mountain pipeline.

While a rally and march took place in downtown Seattle, tribal canoes and kayaktavist took to the waters of the Salish Sea. Jointly, they would meet up, surround and shut down Kinder Morgan’s terminal at the Port of Seattle.

The action led by members of the Tsleil-Waututh 1st Nation. The Tsleil-Waututh 1st Nation lands sit where the pipeline would end.

The Trans-Mountain pipeline, backed by Houston based Kinder Morgan, would transport an estimated 890,000 barrels of tar sands crude from Alberta to Buraby, BC where it would be stored for export to Asian markets. An estimated 700 supertanker trips per year would carry the crude to foreign markets.

Kinder Morgan currently runs a pipeline from the tar sands in Alberta to Cherry Point in Washington State on the lands of the Swinomish Nation.

On April 8th, Kinder Morgan halted spending on the pipeline project due to intense opposition and financial uncertainty. They have stated they will make a decision on the pipeline’s future on May 31st.
