Aug 31, 2017 - Los Angeles City Council Votes to Replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Los Angeles, CA – Today, August 30th 2017, the Los Angeles City voted to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The vote comes after nearly two years of organizing be members of L.A.’s Indigenous community.

Los Angeles joins over 60 cities, counties and states who have elected to replace to Federal holiday Columbus Day, with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. In 2014, the cities of Seattle and Minneapolis voted to establish Indigenous Peoples’ Day on the second Monday in October.

Prior to their votes, only the city of Berkeley, CA had an Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which was established in 1992. The efforts of organizers in Seattle and Minneapolis ignited a Nation wide movement to end Columbus Day by changing it at the local level.
