Feb 10, 2017 - Guide to Divestment by Rachel Heaton
“When people with no easy access to money take on big money, it’s always a hard, uphill battle. The side with lots of money can afford to take some losses and burn through resources in court proceedings that those without money cannot. Therefore, a variety of strategies are necessary to even the playing field: direct action, media pressure, shaming, etc. One such method that has worked when dealing with well-moneyed opposition is divestment.” ~Gyasi Ross (Blackfeet) & Matt Remle (Lakota)
So you would like to see your own city divest from one of the banks that support Dakota Access Pipeline???? Here is how the Defund DAPL: Seattle Action Coalition and the local Native community did it.
Guide to divestment
Important article on why it’s important to divest. https://lastrealindians.com/divest-now-joint-statement-regarding-the-next-stage-in-the-fight-against-dakota-access-pipeline-by-gyasi-ross-matt-remle/
“The How to Divest” tool kit- Use this kit to get your city’s campaign started and see what we’ve done to get our city to divest. Here is the link to get started https://sites.google.com/view/divest-city/home
Focus on all banks supporting fossil fuel projects and not just Wells Fargo. – Below is a list of the 17 Banks that are invested in DAPL and all of their contact information.
Passing a Tribal resolution to divest. Attached is the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s resolution 591-16 that, “end[ed] its financial relationships with banks, mutual funds, security companies or other financial entities that invest in, or otherwise financially support any aspect of the Dakota Access Pipeline. This action will end more than two decades of banking with Wells Fargo.”
Find colleges to question their money sources, seek out Native nations, Cities and Colleges who have money in financial institutions that support DAPL.
Bank with a Credit Union. Opening an account with a Credit Union is a great alternative to banking with for-profit Bank. Banks are for-profit institutions whose goal is to make money for their stockholders. Credit Unions are not-for-profit member owned entities whose goal is to pass profits on back to its customers. Find a local Credit Union here
On September 9, 2016 the Seattle City Council voted unanimously to support the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and oppose the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. This is a good document for cities to start with as it shows the city’s efforts to support Standing Rock, but to also ratify treaty rights and tribal sovereignty. See the City of Seattle NoDAPL Resolution here.
On February 7, 2017 the Seattle City Council voted unanimously to end its relationship with Wells Fargo due to the banks financing of DAPL and other unethical banking practices. This is the document you want approved from your city to make the divestment official. Here is the link to the text of the ordinance the City of Seattle approved, ending Seattle’s $3 billion per year relationship. https://seattle.legistar.com/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=2948595&GUID=F2604ED2-C0BC-44AA-9985-F3E338B8FBC9&Options=Advanced&Search=&FullText=1
Gather together a list of people of influence and their contact information- State Representatives, Congress, City Council etc… USE this information and get it out to the public, post on social media and broadcast them at events and rallies. Have folks flood these individuals with calls.
Support Native owned banks. Attached is an article listing several Native American owned banks. Support them.
Keep the energy of the divestment going throughout the entire process of getting your city to divest. Hold rallies, events, come up with creative ways and possible civil disobedience to keep people interested and engaged. Post updates, videos, and messages regularly on a page you have devoted to your city’s divestment campaign and let people know what this is all about.
Important hash tags used to get the word out when posting on FB- #defunddapl #bankexit #startwithseattle #standwithstandingroc
To assist with research efforts such as finding what banks cities are invested in and locate cities that are helping fund DAPL please go to www.divestyourcity.org and submit your information there.
I think we really make a statement when it’s the everyday people doing this work, if anything I hope it empowers individuals to come together and do the same.
