President Obama to visit Standing Rock Nation
As a result of a welcomed announcemet from the President of the United States, leaders of the Standing Rock Reservation are set to host POTUS at an upcoming Native American Celebration of Song and Dance at the annual Cannonball Flag Day Powwow on June 13, 2014. LastRealIndians was on hand in Washington, D.C. at the White House Tribal Nations Conference (November 2013) at which President Obama announced that he would visit an Indian Reservation. At that time, Standing Rock Chairman Dave Archambault II and Vice Chairman Jesse McLaughlin were able to secure a personal meeting with POTUS to discuss Tribal Priorities.
President Obama’s scheduled visit to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal homelands is the first time in 18 years a sitting President of the United States is visiting Indian Country; the last time being President Clinton’s visit to the Pine Ridge Reservation.
This is not the first time Obama has been to Indian Country. Then Senator Obama visited the Crow Nation as he campaigned to become the 44th POTUS; it was during this visit that Pres. Obama was adopted by a Crow family and given an Absalooke (Crow) name: One Who Helps the People Across the Land. This time President Obama will be welcomed in Sitting Bull’s homelands.
