Dec 24, 2014 - Native Americans Most Likely to be Killed by Law Enforcement According to Recent Report
A recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Health Statistics, states that Native Americans are the “racial” group most likely to be killed by law enforcement. Following Native Americans are African Americans, Latinos, Whites, and Asian Americans in order of most likely to be killed by law enforcement.
While the report acknowledges that hard data on the actual number of police killings are difficult to obtain, the CDC report states that between 1999 through 2011 4,531 people were killed by law enforcement with 96% of them being men.
According to the report: “Native Americans, 0.8 percent of the population, comprise 1.9 percent of police killings. African Americans, 13 percent of the population, are victims in 26 percent of police shootings. Law enforcement kills African Americans at 2.8 times the rate of white non-Latinos, and 4.3 times the rate of Asians.”
New Mexico, Nevada, District of Columbia, Oregon, Maryland and California ranked as the top six states, or jurisdictions, where a person is most likely to be killed by law enforcement.
The report was released in late August 2014. Since its release the mass demonstrations have erupted across the country springing from the non-indictments in officer shootings in Ferguson and New York. On December 20th, Allen Locke (Lakota) was killed by a cop in Rapid City, SD.
