FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 7th, Proclaim!
Indigenous Peoples Voice Realities of the 250th Anniversary of the Royal Proclamation
Andrea Landry & Angela Bercier

October 7th marks the 250th year in which the Royal Proclamation was signed across Indigenous territories. This document legally mandated the country of Canada to honor Indigenous land rights. Indigenous peoples on the unceded and unsurrended territory of the Algoniquin peoples are standing in solidarity to proclaim Indigenous sovereignty over the Royal Proclamation of 1763. The gathering will take place at the Museum of Civilization from 11am-1pm.

Across the nation, Indigenous people are collectively practicing Indigenous solidarity by ensuring that the colonial country of Canada protects and promotes the true intent of the Royal Proclamation of 1763. Not only was it the initial starting point in establishing a respectful relationship between Indigenous peoples and settlers when Canada was first developing, it also promoted the protection of Indigenous inherent rights to land, water, and traditional livelihoods.

The Royal Proclamation of 1763 further states “And we do further strictly enjoin and require all Person whatever who have either wilfully or inadvertently seated themselves upon any Lands within the Countries above described, or upon any other Lands which, not having been ceded to or purchased by Us, are still reserved to the said Indian.” This statement alone justifies the further development of Section 35 of the Constitution which promotes and protects Aboriginal land rights and title within Canada.

October 7th – Proclaim hopes to further advocate for the protection and honoring of present day treaties, which began within the Royal Proclamation of 1763.

It is within this process that we hope to see people from across the nation stand in solidarity with the Indigenous purpose and intent of the 250th anniversary.
