Gitxsan First Nations tribal member killed by Surrey Transit Police

On December 28th, 2014 23-year-old Naverone Christian Landon Woods (Gitxsan First Nation) was killed by Surrey Transit police in Surrey British Columbia.

Naverone Christian Landon Woods, a resident of Hazelton, B.C., had been staying in Surrey, located just east of Vancouver, with his girlfriend after attending a funeral for his uncle in Vancouver earlier in December.

Transit police report being called to a convenience store located near the Surrey Central SkyTrain station where they encountered Woods, reportedly with a knife, where the fatal shooting took place.

His family say the situation, as described by the transit police, as “out of character for him [Naverone Christian Landon Woods]” and describe him as “a gentle, quiet guy who had no history of mental illness.” He is further described as being a fun loving young man who had a lot of friends and loved to play basketball and hockey.

Investigators with the Independent Investigations Office continue to look into the incident.

The shooting comes on the heels of another police shooting of a Native man Allen Locke (Lakota), by Rapid City police, and the non-indictment of officers involved in the killings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.
